Did anyone actually read this story? I think it's quite disgusting to read that we as a community discriminate against people with lung cancer.

I disagree Mandi; I read it as saying that Australian's have no sympathy for those that don't help themselves. Which, as a smoker, I can understand.

yes i can understand that, but i also feel as a country we are very unsympathetic to a lot and are the greatest knockers in the world. people who have never smoked can also develop lung cancer and as a smoker trying to quit the habit knows how hard it is, i would not like sympathy from people but understanding.

Unfortunately Smokers are the new fat people. We can't discriminate against overweight people anymore because they have a definate medical condition so we will just knock the smokers, they are an easy target.
Cancer is cancer, wether you get it from smoking, from having too many sexual partners, from a genetic marker from your parents, from eating too much fried food or from the hand of god just touching you and saying Guess What Your It, it still suxs and it's still a killer.

When people think of cancers caused by smoking, the first one that comes to mind is always lung cancer. Most cases of lung cancer death, close to 90% in men, and 80% in women are caused by cigarette smoking. There are several other forms of cancer attributed to smoking as well, and they include cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, bladder, stomach, cervix, kidney and pancreas, and acute myeloid leukemia. The list of additives allowed in the manufacture of cigarettes consists of 599 possible ingredients. When burned, cigarette smoke contains over 4000 chemicals, with over 40 of them being known carcinogens.
•Cancer is the second leading cause of death and was among the first diseases causally linked to smoking.
•Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death, and cigarette smoking causes most cases.
•Smoking causes about 90% of lung cancer deaths in men and almost 80% in women.
