Oh and after the scene in the vet clinic that included his mother hitting him and yelling at him, he went home and tried to kill himself. It was all a bit out of keeping with the rest of the episodes.

I think Connie is a conniving little bitch and I hate that she got away with screwing up his life with no consequence to herself at all.
That was my initial thought too but thinking it over....she is young....too young, perhaps given her circumstances, to fully understand the implications of her actions. I would like to think that Richie's suicide attempt went some way to addressing that.

...I don't think so.....the story was about hitting the young. It showed that we are all capable of it.

After reading all the messages here Im thinking I might just have to read the book and then watch the series.

The author is related to my SIL. Im sure she will have a copy of the book i can pinch over Christmas.
All the language can be a bit overwhelming after a while...is it the same in the tv series or did they tone it down

The Age - A Melbourne newspaper had an article for the top 10 TV shows of 2011 and *The Slap* came in at number 1 with *Downton Abby* number 2

No the language and tone is the same, I am getting the series from the ABC shop for my folks for Christmas. The book is brilliant.
