Re: Spectrum Kids
Thanks. DD's year 1 teacher has one on the spectrum who is now an adult. Her prep teacher has had 13 years in a special school and went back to mainstream the year before. But year 2 has been tough because she has clueless teachers. Will pass this onto her teachers for year 3.

Re: Spectrum Kids
Not full time. Only a couple of hours per day but just been approved an extra 5 hours for next year to assist with separation at drop off. For year 1 she had to be partially home schooled.

Re: Spectrum Kids
not all kids get teachers aids
we have been fighting for years for an aid my daughter only just got one
& she's in year 5 only because her Pediatrician & psychologist sent a very
to the point letter to the school & education department!
& even then the school councilor had to move things around & fix numbers up for the education dept
to get any funding!
even then it's not that much!"There's no point in being grown up if you can't be childish sometimes."

Re: Spectrum Kids
The only reason mine has one is because we are private and I funded most of the aide time last year then she has part of the day without one and 2 days a week homeschooled. Once I stopped paying and put her in full ti,e school the staff really had a hard time so then the school paif bevause I no longer could. In a public school I would not have had the option of providing one myself so I believe she would still be without one.

Re: Spectrum Kids
how it works in my area is the children who need extra help in any degree go to one of the local schools instead of having them all over the place, then they are placed in very small classes with one teacher and an aide.
it works really well.
we all had to fight hard for this to happen and to get the funding many years ago for these children who needed it, cant tell you how gratelfull the parents were.
then we intergrate them into the local high school with class sizes of only 10.
the other kids go out of their way to help them be apart of the high school even though they arent in their classes, they are always included in year activities etc....
my nephew ( he lives in another area)has special needs also as he has aspergers and he goes to a special intensive class for half the day with a couple of others then goes back to his mainstream class for the rest of the day, gees it makes a diffrence.Sparkles

Re: Spectrum Kids
LMF could you not get the P&C to rally on your behalf for the funding, i have done it for parents before and got the funding for them but it wasnt easy, i had to sit on panals and put the case forwarded etc...as to why produce letters from doctors and teachers etc....
