    Silicon glue?

Has anyone ever used this stuff for outside items that you want to put on the wall but not use permanent fixing like nails etc? Mum's builder suggested it but I have no idea whether he means silica or silicone which apparently are two different things. It is only a lightweight item so would rather not drill into the render unless we have to since John is DIY impaired when it comes to stuff like that.

well DP just said silica is the raw material, like a dust or powder and you won't get it in a glue. He said silicone glue can adhere just about anything to a wall but it isn't instant and takes hours to set. So unless you are going to stand there and hold it for hours you will need to put a holding screw in that can then be removed. I guess unless it is really super light and you keep going back to make sure it is in position or else it will slide down the wall and maybe the roughness of the render will help it stay in place?

Thank you CB and Leilani....that's the kind of feedback I was after - that it is possible. It is a tea light holder that I want to put on the wall near the spa. Without the glass containers in it, it is incredibly light. With the glass containers, it adds possibly half a kilo. I just didn't want to use it if I was going to come home one day and find that it had fallen off the wall altogether since it is a gift from MIL. She is constantly asking if we have it up yet and I'm worried that if we don't get it up soon, she will think that we don't like it at all. Which is the exact opposite - I love it and I would have had it up Christmas Day 2010 if we remotely had any idea what we were doing.

Can either of you ask your hubby what type of screw would be best to hold it in place? I'm thinking that it could possibly even stay in the wall permanently if it isn't that noticeable. A bit of a security measure IYKWIM.

FWIW I'm a little embarrassed to ask at the hardware store. The last time I asked something like this the guy laughed at me...presuming that he wouldn't have if John had asked him instead.

Liquid nails or builders bog, if it's brickwork you need a masonary drill you can get special brackets they go on brickwork you have to have a plug you put in the hole then you screw into that.

    What red said!

Do you have a bunnings near you? I find most hardware stores like you described but bunnings is great, doesn'tatter how dumb your question is they are really helpful and all employees are just normal people and they expect their customers to want to learn about DIY handy men jobs, they even give classes.

There is a Bunnings not far away. We go there most weekends. Getting someone to help is a bit of a headache but another one further away is generally easier to seek assistance. I'll tell John what the suggestions are and see what he wants to do. Thanks for the tips girls.
