Checking bank statements
I have to confess that previously I didn't check them that much unless I wanted to make sure that a future dated payment had gone through. Lately we have been a little more thorough with this though (because of the credit card fraud debacle) and it is paying off. So far we have discovered two lots of payments which should not have been coming out. One is for mortgage insurance on a loan we have had closed since 2009. It isn't a huge amount which is why it has slipped through unnoticed until we looked more closely. The other was for a recovery care program (for illness and trauma) which I should only have one policy for but a clerical error was made when I moved house which resulted in a second policy created with identical premiums and benefits. The original one I was paying yearly when it came due and the other by direct debit. I have asked for a full refund of the duplicate premiums but I'll have to wait until Monday for feedback.
So girls, if you don't check your bank statements each month for anomalies, it might be a good idea to start.

Re: Checking bank statements
I check our accounts online every single day and especially the credit card where there has been a couple of times there have been unauthorised transactions and we have got our money refunded. These days you have to be on the ball...

Re: Checking bank statements
Yes, bit of a pedantic online checker here too - although not quite every day - at least once a week though.
And I dont do direct debit and I dont have a credit card linked to my account.
I do have a credit card but it is separate - I do check the statement when it comes monthly - but I spend so little on it, I would notice straight away if anything unauthorised was on it.

Thanks for the reminder, I really should do it more regularly. And yes Jen, phone bills I always check, can't count how many times telstra have over billed me in the past!

PM me if you want to give specific examples of your billing issues with Telstra, so I can build a business case.
