I know nothing of these devices or how they work, but my Galaxy mobile seems just as good as my brother's iPhone so I can't see there would be any great concerns. I'm not fond of the idea of buying an I-anything for either of us.

Question: if the kid had an Android, would they be able to access the same apps?

I think it's text books rather than specific apps at Hugo's school so I'd assume android has access to the same e-text-books as iPhone through non-platform-specific e-reader apps.

No idea about the educational apps. Unless the school provided the device I can't honestly see how they can prescribe it on the 'book list', it's a bit beyond acceptable IMO.
