I just came back from a workshop on the sexualisation of young girls in the media. I have been a social worker for 23 years and I am sick of everything just getting worse when we start to see it emerge.
As the mum of a sweet innocent 7 year old, I wont' sit back and fight this fight alone anymore. I'm coming on board and we're going to stop this stupidity once and for all.
Let's let our children be bloody children for goodness sake.

Bad toy...At least we can prevent our children to play with this toy. Choosing toys and entertainment for children become difficult matter nowadays...

The new doll is just plain silly. However, I don't believe it does any harm on its own. I feel that the real hurdle is getting parents to NOT elevate the thing to the position of a role model. Parents don't seem to realise THEY are the first port of call for role modeling and that they are capable of influencing their children into disdaining this sort of fake social promotion of growing up/sexuality. Parents need to get in and ACT POSITIVE right from the start- offering positive models of human-ness which kids will adopt. Then kids can say no to the dolls/images/T-shirts with a bit of extra encouragement. Parents CAN give kids the tools to reject what will lead to perilous development. Teachers have bugger all influence really- it takes an exceptional human being to be a teacher that kids admire as much as parent. By the time kids get to school, its starting to be too late.

I could not believe that doll you described!

I always thought I would never be one of those who would say "in my day" but the morphing of young girls into ones who will accept such sexualisation is horrifying - and I in no way consider myself a prude, just one who not only hopes her own daughter can grow in her own time to be a strong and free-thinking woman, and be regarded by her peers on her own terms, not as a sexual object.

Great post. Oh, except for the loose/lose bit, but that is purely pedantic and based on a childhood experience of my mother constantly correcting spelling. Ah, the good old days (ha ha).

What a fabulous post, thank you so much, it was very refreshing to read. At the moment I am only a mother to boys, but I have to say I do worry about any future daughters I may have and the effect of the current trends on them.
