Thursday helpdesk-Buying a digital camera
Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the ladies that took the time to offer their advice in last weeks Life Coaching helpdesk question. We had some wonderful replies that were really helpful, thank you.
This weeks question came from Helen, and she asks…
” I am looking to buy my first digital camera, I mainly want it just for basic family snaps..nothing too snazzy. I don’t know the first thing about them. Where is a good place to find and compare different types of cameras and what sort of features should I be looking for?”
2 great sites that I use are Digital Photography School, it has some great information on all aspects of digital photography from choosing your equipment, to tips and guides to get the best out of your photography. Also dpreview, an amazing resource for anyone looking to buy a digital camera, they have information and reviews on most current models of digital cameras.
What other first time camera buying tips do you ladies have for Helen?

I would go to a camera store if possible and compare them there, ask any questions of the camera store staff as well (often they will be better able to answer questions than staff in general electrical stores).
Also, compare prices between stores.
The links quoted are great review sites but if Helen has time I’d read a few photography forums too because there are always people asking that question and it’s good to get feedback from camera owners. Amazon also have great product reviews so if she has a couple of models in mind I’d head for there, incidentally I have bought 2 cameras from Amazon because they were lowest price, with free and fast delivery. Best plan is to work out your budget and take it from there. Be sure to look at the battery performance AND don’t forget your camera will come with a small memory card (my latest only took 8 photo’s) so you have to buy either a 512mb or a 1GB to snap happy!
